August 22nd, Open House!

ToNIGHT!! Open house! Come meet Sandy Struble. If you are enrolled in the cottage school program, come see your class room and bring your school supplies to put in your cubbie :) Does any one need supplies? Let us know! We have some.
Please pack a complete snack/lunch every day for your child when he/she has cottage class. At about 1:20 we have a snack break in the classroom before they go out to play at recess.
Open House is Monday, August 22nd, 4:30-6:30. It is not required, but just a good time to meet and see the classroom/office associated with the Cottage/Online Programs.

Cottage 1  is Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:10-2:55

Cottage 2 is Thursdays and Fridays from 11:10-2:55

Students should line up at 11:10 along the white fence directly in front of Gateway's front door. I will come out and Greet the class and walk them in. Pick up at 2:55 is a one way flow lane that can take 10-15 minutes. First few days I'll walk the class to the flag pole and have them point out your car as you pull through. If you want to get out of your car, park in the parking lot across the road from the front of the school & use the cross walk.

Children may bring in a "Show-n-tell" one time each week. I especially encourage Book Reports or other academic related items to share. Sometimes the kids read their book or a portion of it, tell about it, act it out, draw a picture, or a traditional written 'report' in the older cottage class. Kindergartners can even give a talk about a book read to them. Many show-n-tells end up being toys, but we have had a variety including, interesting rocks, crafts from home, etc.

Thanks,
Sandy

Assesment Meeting follow-up

Thank you for coming to our first writing assessment meeting. I’d love feedback.

I hope it was somewhat useful. My goal was to make a connection between what you are teaching (the curriculum) and what assessments ask the children to do. Also, I wanted to emphasize the teaching of writing.

Writing does take time. Students in second grade and up can fit a plan, a writing, and an edited writing into your schooling once a week or more.

It probably is within their work somewhere already.

They can start doing this independently and like anything else it takes practice. So let them practice.

I meant to have Pippi Howard, my assistant, share her success. Within ONE week of the same discussion we all had, she saw HUGE growth in her second grader’s independent writing ability. Your kids will amaze you. She just gave a prompt, suggested a plan, gave time to write, and is yet to edit the writing. It was easy and had great results. Hope it wasn’t overwhelming.

Do remember to mention to your student that a “plan” can be a web, cluster, brainstorm list, pro/cons type list, alike/different list, OUTLINE (especially in older grades), or pre-writing. I really want the students to know that what they are doing may be referred to as a plan or planning their writing.

The site Eve suggested for CSAP examples and info.

Writing Assesment [& Other testing] meeting

Meeting Reminder!!!

I am very excited to invite all of you to an informative meeting about students’ writing expectations this Wednesday at 10:15.

Every year the online students are required to take tests asking them to write from a prompt with a plan and I watch their blank stares.

I am so thankful that Eve Owen The Instructional Resource Teacher here will show all of us homeschoolers what to expect so our kids are more prepared and less “freaked out” when encountering the writing portion of assessments.

I also am excited because in all my years of homeschooling and teaching I have seen writing as the most neglected subject despite how important it is in school and in life.

Hope to see you on Wed. January 26th at 10:15 to just get some background and ideas from Eve. I hope to also provide a bridge between the curriculum you use and its presentation of writing and what the assessments ask for –so as not to make more work for anyone, but to help simplify it all.

Please come for info. if you are in assessment grades (2nd grade has a writing assessment coming up in April and 3rd -5th have writing on the CSAP)
Kindergarten and 1st Grades have writing to look forward toJ and be prepared for. It’s all goodJ

Yes, of course bring your children. I will probably be in the back of the room watching them ALL play but yet not missing the meeting (questions , answers, concerns for my own benefit) but I will try not to be too disruptive with them while parents sit toward the front and try to listen.

FREE housecleaning for cancer patients

CLEANING FOR A REASON
http://www.cleaningforareason.org/

If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning - once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

Great information. You may not know someone going through chemo, but someone on your email list might.
