Dear families,
Gateway's fun'd run/walk is our lap running/walking fundraiser where ALL proceeds go to student field trips and programs. Signing up for pledges or donations is easy!

You may pledge a certain amount per lap, or a flat donation for participating. Don't forget to ask friends and family to pledge too! After the Fun'd Run, students will bring home a certificate with the number of laps he/she ran or walked. Please send in your cash or checks in the envelope that was sent home with students.
Make checks payable to WPSD FOUNDATION, Fun'd Run in the memo line.

You can make a tax-deductible donation right now for the Gateway Fun'd Run. You can turn in cash or checks written to the WPSD FOUNDATION/Fun'r Run written in the memo line. Students can turn this in to their teachers or the front office.
You can mail check to Gateway Elementary School, 100 Panther Way, Woodland Park, CO 80863.

News: Hello Cottage and Online families!

Just a few notes as we get this school year started! Welcome to Gateway Elementary Cottage School and Online School Programs! We love having you join us!

~  Shoes! Please do not wear open toed shoes to school. Please keep P.E. safe running shoes in backpack as you never know when we have P.E.

 

~Due to special allergy situations in this years cottage class, we are going through disinfectant wipes at lightening speeds! If anyone would be willing to donate a container of disinfectant wipes for the classroom, we would be very grateful. 

All students and guests to our classroom should wash their hands when entering the room and after every time they touch food

~One of our handouts explains this years FUN'd RUN! ALL STUDENTS will need a white T-shirt to decorate in Art class. Please be sure to bring these the next time you have class: Cottage 1, Tuesday, Cottage 2, Wednesday.

~ LEARN Academy (like student council only MORE!) Student leadership opportunities. Let me know if you can bring your student to 7am meetings on Friday mornings

~Group sharing time; every morning, part of our routine is a group sharing time. We really encourage written reports (even just a couple of sentences for the littler kiddos is appropriate). Some of our online students bring work that they have completed at home to share, other students have shown homeschool items like lapbooks, etc. Other kids bring interesting items and tell about them. This is great too! We have had students perform on their musical instruments, sing songs, bring in lego projects, etc. Anything that is exciting to them, except live animals and weapons are not allowed in school. However, written reports will receive a prize that the student selects from the "ducky-bag".

{*Ducky-bag item donations, such as small toys, special notebooks, books, games, etc. are always accepted. These may be second hand items!}

~Please check your students backpacks, as we often send home handouts which may contain important information.

~We have a couple of field trips coming up: ALL PARENTS AND SIBLINGS AND ONLINE STUDENT FAMILIES ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND FIELD TRIPS AND CLASS PARTIES, etc. We have emailed permission slips. Please email and let us know if you need that again.

    Our first adventure will be a walking field trip to the Woodland Park Public Library. We will get a personal tour of the library, which includes a few treasures that typical library goers wouldn't know about, as well as really great tips about using their new website and online resources, and the home school resource room. We will bring lunches and eat outside on the Library lawn afterwards (weather permitting).Tuesday Cottage 1 class: September 16Wednesday Cottage 2 class: September 17We will leave the building at 10:40 am (Parents can meet us in the Cottage classroom at 10:30 and walk with us, or meet us at the library)***NEED PERMISSION SLIPS***

    Our second adventure will be a walking field trip of the Historical buildings that are managed by the Ute Pass Historical Society. These are the buildings adjacent to the Woodland Park Library. You can learn more: www.utepasshistoricalsociety.org

This field trip will only be on Wednesday, October 1st. If you attend a different day or are online only, you are welcome to join us! We will leave the building again at 10:40. We will eat our lunch at Memorial Park then meet at the Ute Pass Historical buildings at 11:45. ***NEED PERMISSION SLIPS***

A note to parents about attending field trips: The school requires all attending parents to fill in the volunteer form to be approved to attend school events that are off campus. Pick up a volunteer form from us or the front office and turn these into the front office ASAP, if you haven't already.

     *End of Year Reports this year are to be of Historical Biographies of Famous People - All students study and then give report in character of their chosen Historical Figure. Recommend dressing as the person, being in character (or what you think that person would be like), bring visual aids, poster board presentation, or however you feel would best represent the historical figure.  Students will answer questions from the parents/students about their character, in character, as best they can-IMPROVISATION IS OK! 

     We will need the list of who they choose so we can all study what questions to ask each report presenter. Or better yet, as we get closer, email me the facts you are uncovering and I can forward them to all of us to prepare how to interview each famous person that will be depicted. Also, snacks brought for the party should be related to the character. Their favorite food or a food from their home country or state, etc. (i.e. I heard a famous hockey player ate steak and eggs before every game...not sure if that could be made into a snack, but I was shocked to know that info. was out there, Ewan)

This is a reminder that next week Gateway will be having its annual Community Cupboard Food Drive. Last year we collected around 2500 lbs of food. 

It would be very helpful if we all brought in boxes to donate for this great cause. The

 

boxes will be used for sending the food with Community Cupboard.

Save Your Halloween Candy When your teeth and stomach have had enough, remember to save your leftover Halloween candy for our students to make Gingerbread Houses in December! Pizza Time Every time you buy a pizza at Papa Murphy's on our scheduled pizza nights, they donate money to our school!  Pizza night is the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Remember to look for the flyer sent home with your child. The school counselor is an advocate for students, working to advance their academic, career, personal, and social development. The counselor helps students work through problems that may be keeping them from reaching their potential at school. As the counselor at Gateway, I provide individual counseling for students. I conduct small, needs-based groups, dealing with issues like anger management and how to be a good friend. I also teach guidance lessons in the classroom, using the Second Step curriculum. The Second Step program addresses the issues facing a majority of our students, like bullying prevention and conflict resolution. School counselors are also involved in: decision making skills School Counselors can help students with.... The panther volleyball teams were back at it last night.  In the 7th grade game, Rachel Roulette, Sammy Buchholz, and Libby Blacklock had some aggressive serves while Morgan Rose had some awesome saves. Anna Hovanaetz and Nikki Kemp had the best hustle, but unfortunately fell short good job panthers.

For the eighth grade game they started off strong with great hustle from Natalie Graber and great sets from Ashley DeLarm. They finished powerful in the second game with killer serves from Ariel Waite, good blocks by Mackenzie Shultz, and ending the game with Taylor Alvarez's powerful serving.  The panthers are in action again tonight at home.  Great job panthers!

*The football games last night were nail-biters!  The Woodland Park 8th grade team started strong and kept up the pressure on Fremont.  We did not let up at all, and showed our guests that WP is not to be trifled with.  WP won 32 - 0.

The 7th grade team had their work cut out for them.  The game went back and forth between offences, and both teams pushed their hardest to score.  In the 3rd quarter, Fremont got by WP to score a touchdown, but WP would not let the other team do anymore scoring.  The ending score showed Fremont won 6-0.

The eighth grade class is starting their Baby simulators.  You will see and hear them crying and being cared for.  This is a class project and they get a grade so any interference by other students will be noted and dealt with severely.  Do not touch, grab or otherwise interfere with the students taking care of the simulators.

ROAR store will be open Friday morning starting at 7:00AM.. Take your ROAR bucks home with you today so you have them to use Friday morning!

If you missed the book club kickoff last week, never fear - you can still join a group!  Just come see Mrs. Walter sometime this week to be placed in a club. 

Come swing with us!  The Middle School is hosting a swing dance on Saturday, September 28th.  There will be lessons starting at6:30pm and the dance is from 7-9pm.  You can come and dance, or just come for the live music!  The community jazz band, Swing Factory, is playing and students from the high school Madrigals will be singing standards from the 1940's.  This is a dance for the whole community, so bring your whole family to listen or dance!  Tickets are sold at the door for $8 per person or $15 per couple and the lesson is an additional $4 per person.  There will also be refreshments for sale.  All proceeds go to the Disneyland trip.  It's going to be lots of fun, hope to see you there!

WOODLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL WORKROOM NEWS:

The Rocky Mountain Field Institute has added more volunteer days this fall to help with the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest burn scar restoration, as well as Garden of the Gods and Barr Trail projects. The minimum age for work on the projects is 16, but if you come with a parent volunteer it is 13. Go to the events calendar on their website for more information – www.rmfi.org.

Starting today, join Book Club at lunch in the library to read The Fault on Our Stars by John Green.  Everyone is welcome!

Starting on Thursday during lunch, join book club in reading, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.  Everyone is welcome.

To All Students:  Are you a student who's making a difference through volunteering?  Apply for a 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Award and you could win $1000 and a trip to Washington, DC, next May!  For more information come by the counseling office and talk with your counselor

To all college-bound best and brightest WPHS seniors:   If you are considering attending college in Colorado, come to the counseling office to talk with your counselor about the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship.  If you are successful through the application process, Boettcher offers a full tuition, expenses and grants scholarship for 4 years of undergraduate studies.

Aloha!!!  The Homecoming dance will be on October 5th from 8-11pm in the main gym.  Dress attire will be semi-formal:  Girls must wear dresses, and guys must wear pants and a tie.  Tickets will be sold at both lunches for $8 and will be sold for $10 at the dance door.  Bring your friends and enjoy a night in Hawaii!!!
